#OTD Battle of Kula Gulf 1943

During the night 5-6.07.1943 battle of Kula Gulf took place.

Admiral William Halsey was informed of another "Tokyo Express" (night delivery of personnel, supplies, and equipment to Japanese forces operating in and around New Guinea and the Solomon Islands) mission, from Buin, on Bougainville. Halsey decided to intercept Japanese convoy with Task Force 36.1 (3 light cruisers and 4 destroyers). The U.S. ships opened fire at 01:57 hours, quickly sinking the destroyer Niizuki. Two of the Japanese destroyers launched their long range torpedoes and hit cruiser Helena, fatally damaging her. Fierce night naval battle resulted in the sinking of the USS Helena with nearly 170 crewmen lost.
